ANGEL: IMMORTALITY FOR DUMMIES #28 "THE CROWN PRINCE SYNDROME, PART 1"
Covers: (Click for larger)
ANGEL #28
Written by Bill Willingham, art by Brian Denham, covers by Jenny Frison, David Messina.
An all-new adventure begins as Eisner-winning writer Bill Willingham (Fables) takes Angel down some pretty twisted roads as the group's (and its leader's) fame starts causing tension and testing loyalties. Starting in December, Willingham and new artist Brian Denham present part one of "The Crown Prince Syndrome!"
It can't be bargained with. It can't be reasoned with. It doesn't feel pity, or remorse, or fear. And it absolutely will not stop, ever, until you are dead.

I couldn't be more excited about the news. It sounds like the two Bills are really crafting a great story (from what few snippets we have been given). I haven't read FABLES yet, but I hear so many good things about it that I definitely will try to before this new arc begins. Messina doing the art for the Eddie Hope side story is also a great treat and I just can't wait to see how it all comes together.
The new artist seems pretty stellar as well. His style is very similar to Mooney's.

From the initial coverage on Newsarama I was a bit worried bout this. (The whole Angel being missing for a while) but Brian clarified over on IDW that Angel willbe present, but not with the other characters for a while.

This all looks really promising. Fables is a great series and I love David Messina's art. Not familiar with Brian Denham, I just Googled him and his art seems okay. Hopefully Willingham will be on the book for a while; after all these one-shots and mini-series we need some long-term direction for Angel.
I'm interested in what he has planned for Connor. I hated the character on the show but he really came into his own in After the Fall and I'm happy to see more of him. Having him take over from Angel for a while seems like a great idea, it's very Batman and a good chance for Connor to do some growing up.
That Eddie Hope concept art is amazing. Such a cool character design, both the human and the demon forms. I'm already fascinated by the character. I just love David Messina, have done since the abysmal Old Friends and was pissed he didn't get to do more of After the Fall.
One observation; Willingham mentions "Angel Enterprises". Was that something that happened in Aftermath, or something Willingham is introducing? Is Angel Investigations branching out? Intriquing.
"Fictional characters might be imaginary, but, but they're more important than most of us here. And they're all gonna be around long after we're dead. So in a way, those things are more realer than any of us." —Kyle Broflovski, "Imaginationland Episode III"

Nope, that wasn't started in Aftermath. Maybe it is the reason Angel is gone in the beginning? Starting a legitimate business perhaps? With his celebrity stature, it is certainly a possibility.

Maybe it's like a chain of Angel Investigations. Angel's using his fame and fortune to create a huge organisation dedicated to helping the helpless? That's an interesting idea, a little similar to season five though.

Or it was just a joke, isn't Batman owning Wayne Enterprises? Angel is compared to batman at times. So Connor takes over Angel's team and maybe AI and not a complete company.
I doubt that Angel would sit again behind a desk (the same for at least Gunn), if he starts such a big company ... somebody else needs to lead it.
edit: I saw that Ryall promised us a new cover today by Jenny Frison. Is that the one we already have?

Now that I have had a couple hours to sleep on it, I am now thrilled at the concept of Bill Willingham of writing for Angel. Being a huge Fables fan myself, I should have trusted my instinct that this arc would be amazing. I was just kind of skeptical because of what Kelley Armstrong did with Angel: Aftermath.

Hmmm... does Angel move to Miami? Coz the character design for Eddie is pretty much a generic Miami sleazoid, no offense to anyone who chooses to look like that. The creature design is pretty cool... kinda looks a bit like the Beast, except less rocky and with a wicked looking tail.

Some further details from a better report about the panel at Comic-Con:
Quote:
Then came the big reveal of the two writers taking over the series starting with issue number #28 - Bill Willingham and Bill Williams. The writers will team with artists Brian Denham and David Messina. "[IDW] just picked up the phone out of the blue and asked if I'd be interested," said Willingham.
Willingham's stories will feature Angel's son Conner taking over for the main protagonist with an army of demons at his disposal. "We're going to have some fun with Angel and pick up where Brian and the others left off. No big changes, well, we're kicking Angel off the book, but no big changes," said Willingham to laughter.
“Angel's” main storyline will be complimented by backup stories from Williams. Williams' story will follow the adventures of Eddie Hope, a human left with demon powers after the rest of L.A. had them removed. "When Hell took over L.A. snapped back to normal, everything was back to normal mostly, and thanks to the events of the story, Eddie knows the worst 100 people in Las Angeles so he's taking them out – it's a revenge thing," said Williams.

This is what Korkster said about that on Whedonesque. (He was at the Panel.)
Quote:
Well, Xane, the 2BW's are going to dive a little more into the mythology of demons and such. For one, their take on the "devil" is a job- anyone can get hired to do it, while a demon is an actual species. When LA went to hell, there were FAR too many people to torture, so they hired temporary devils to help with the high demand. Eddie Hall was one of those hired. He's a regular guy who's been granted special powers (?) and gear to "punish"/torture those who deserve it.
Well, they're not in Hell-A anymore. BUT, someone forgot to lay off the devils. So, Eddie's going around, vigilante-style, punishing those he thinks/remembers deserve it. But since Hell-A never "happened", these people actually didn't commit any crimes. Doesn't matter, Eddie remembers it anyways, and deals out the torture anyway.
The way they're going to tell the story is to have Angel and Eddie on their separate paths eventually come to clash which (I'm sure) will be epic. We, the readers, will be able to follow each on this journey, with front row seats to the carnage.
IDW further clarified that while Angel may go MIA regarding his friends, he won't go MIA in the comics. (Think Season 2 when Angel goes dark.) He's had enough of fame (which ties to Lynch's CC & Hollywood movie series) and people, so he goes off on his own for a while. But, since Angel narrates anyway, we'll still get to tag-along.
So being famous is annoying for Angel and he leaves for a while.
The promised cover for #28 was indeed the one we already had. Ryall promised in the same post that he will tell more about this arc in the next days and weeks.
