Buffy’s Coming Back! Posted by Scott Fogg on June 18th, 2009 - (0) Comments
I have a friend. A friend who, for now, shall remain nameless. I graduated from film school with this friend. When he graduated, he moved out to LA to persue the dream that is filmmaking. Ever since then, he’s been working his way up the corporate ladder. And just this week, what we have tentatively titled ”his big break” broke.
He was asked to help produce a new Buffy the Vampire Slayer animated series.
Details are still a little vague, but the show will (at least start off as) an adaptation of the Buffy comic books. He described the series as “motion comics.” Will they be taking the original artwork and frames, just adding motion and sound effects, like the Watchmen motion comic or will they prodce a more traditional animated show, using the comic books as storyboards, is not yet certain. And what comics, exactly, is also uncertain. Is it some of the original comics that were released during the show’s run? Or is it from Buffy’s “Season 8?” What is certain is that because they’re using the comic books as their starting point, all our favorite characters will be returning and this animated series will compliment the original series. Whether any of the original cast will provide voices is uncertain (though I’m doubtful). But Joss Whedon is involved.
As my friend put it, “Whedon’s involved, but not on an ‘in-the-studio’ kind of way. He will pop in at bench-marks and give the thumbs up to make the studio happen. Not as much involvement as any of us want, but its better than not any at all.”
Count me excited. I’ve long said I wished that Whedon and company would make the Buffyverse America’s response to Doctor Who.

This better not be some kind of joke, because this has just made my day. I would like them to do some of the omnibuses first or make Fray, then make all of S8. I like the comics but would'nt mind them ending if the animated show took its place.
I hope this is true as they can add more script and add more detail explainations like how did warren die then come back.
It can't be bargained with. It can't be reasoned with. It doesn't feel pity, or remorse, or fear. And it absolutely will not stop, ever, until you are dead.

This is pretty cool, but I'm not a fan of motion comics. They just seem pointless when we have the actual comics right in front of us, it'd be a lot cooler if it was animated. I wonder if they'd be able to get any of the actors. Whether this is true or not, I'm not getting my hopes up, cause honestly I don't care that much.

I remember when they did a similar thing with the Marvel characters (Hulk, Thor, Sub-Mariner, etc.) back in the 60's... just comic book pages with tiny bits of movement, lots of zooming and panning, moving mouths and maybe eyes. They were still showing those cartoons in syndication when I was a kid.
It looked cheap and kind of silly back then.
I certainly hope they don't have just one voice actor doing all the voices (male and female) like they did with the "Watchmen" one. That would just... suck.
I wish they'd just go ahead and do an animated version of season 8. It's not that hard to do nowadays with computer technology. There are even webcomics out there that have animated versions of themselves, done by talented animators looking to make names for themselves. Fox might even be willing to kick in a little money if the episodes could then be sold on iTunes or shown on Hulu.

I'm completely spazzing about this. Even though the past motion comics haven't been great, I think this has the potential to be very good. Especially if there's a full voiced cast to go along with it. To have some of the original cast in the mix would be friggin wonderful!
I really hope that this happens soon, and that it's not some sort of cruel joke.

I feel the same way. I certainly don't need motion comics or even care if we get them. But it is always nice to get new Buffyverse content.

I hope this is true. If it is, we might hear something about it next month at Comic Con. I also hope it has a full voice cast. On that note, with the exception of Sarah Michelle Gellar and Alyson Hannigan, I could see everyone else from the cast as "gettable" to some degree. Heck, all it would really need is Nicholas Brendan for it to have credibility and legitimacy.
If this is true animation, it might be out next year. If they just use flash, it might be out in 6 months.

Is there a reason Alyson would be hard to convince?
I'd be more concerned with Michelle Trachtenberg saying no. But aside from SMG, I don't see why any of the cast would be reluctant to do it. Scheduling problems would be the only reason, but voice acting is very easy to work around people's schedules.

Thinking about it, I probably wouldn't even watch these if they aren't the actual actors. I like being able to hear the actor's voice in my head while reading the comics, thinking about how they would deliver a particular line. If the voices aren't the actors, then these random people would stay in my brain and I'd pull an Andrew everytime I'd read an issue. I really don't want that to happen.

There is also payment, which could be a big issue.

Yeah if the actors, as a whole, want more money than the budget for these motion comics allow, then we'll be listening to Joe Schmoe read them instead of Alyson Hannigan. Not all that exciting.

I did say ""gettable" to some degree". I add Alyson Hannigan to that list because she has went on and actually done noteable work in hollywood. She is more up there than most of the others.
And on Michelle Trachtenberg. I'd be perfectly ok with a voice recast.

That's why I'd prefer they did a real animated series. That way it might be worthwhile for Fox to get involved with some funding, so they have an attractive enough product that they could sell the episodes, put them up in streaming format supported by ads, and eventually have a nice DVD set to sell.
Voice acting pays less than regular acting; most of the stars are on very good terms with Joss and the fans. I'll bet most of them would be willing to spend a couple of hours reading lines in a studio, in their jeans and sneakers, without charging millions of dollars. It's easy money for little effort, and it would make the fans ecstatic.
(I wish one of the big British charity telethons... Children in Need, Comic Relief or something like that... would broach the idea of a Buffy charity special. 15-20 minutes long, written and directed by JW, starring as much of the original cast as can be rounded up. SMG might even say yes if it was a one-off for charity.)

I don't really see a problem with casting unknowns, as long as they properly embody the characters. I've heard some amazing voice doubles in fan productions, so I'm sure the professionals could find someone just as good. Though... I do hope that they don't use the actress that voiced Willow in Chaos Bleeds. I wasn't particularly happy with her.
